Web designers are often thought of as one and the same, but often
this isn't actually the case! A web designer might have some of the
skills of a web developer and vice versa and freelancers often tick all
the boxes from all categories, Within agencies however there is usually
one area that the skilled individual will focus on.
Web designers
In industry, these tend to be the creative driver for a new web project. Their skills are in graphic design. Often they will be expected to have knowledge of usability, colour and layout theory and any other skills that contribute towards the creative elements of producing a website.
They will quite often need some knowledge of technology such as HTML and CSS which are the main technologies used to produce the front end (what the user sees) of the website. They might even have a little knowledge of Javascript or Flash to create dynamic or animated websites.
This technical coding side of web design is these days often left to a Front end web developer.
Front end web developers
Front end web developers are often expected to have a little bit of creativity and knowledge of user centered design but in addition to this they have a comprehensive knowledge of HTML and CSS as well as client side scripting technologies such as Javascript, Jquery and AJAX.
Front end web developers are expected to also have a knowledge of accessibility and requirements of search engine friendly websites.
Their
overall role is often to take the design from the designer and convert
it into a 'web front end' that looks exactly the same in all browsers,
which is often the most time consuming part of front end web
development.
Web application developers/ Database developers / Back end developers
These are what we are usually referring to when we talk about 'Web developers' those who have the knowledge and expertise to create complex applications from scratch that power the website and decide what information is passed through for the users to see
There is a massive choice of programming technologies employed in website development the most popular being PHP and ASP.NET.
